More Time Studies in the style of the Modern Jazz Drummers

by Michael Green

The following is a continuation of my last article. Again, these are from an upcoming book co-authored by myself and Danny Gottlieb called "In the Style of the Modern Jazz Drummers". Same drill as before: These time playing exercises are to be played with the systems or ostinatos below. Not all of the exercises work with each system (set a includes the hi-hat foot and set b omits the hi-hat foot) Therefore, the exercises are labeled accordingly. For example 1ab would work with both sets of systems and 2b would only work with set b. Make sure and check out the audio examples. You can play right along with me or repeat after me in the measures between. For an added challenge, try playing through all the measures back to back without playing a measure of time in between or playing any repeats. Oh yeah....don't forget the accents!!!

I hope you have enjoyed this issue of Percussion Sessions. Feel free to contact me with questions, comments, or if you are interested in writing for Percussion Sessions at michaeldrums@gmail.com.

Happy playing and best wishes,

Michael
